Eight-year-old Maya, a tried and true Tom Boy, asked her mom one day while shopping for clothes, "Why do boys get all the cool stuff?" And for non-girly girls everywhere, that's a darn good question!
Sharon Choksi was so inspired by her daughter's plight to find "cool clothes" that are actually made for girls that she created Girls Will Be, a clothing line designed for Tom Boys.
There are no purple flowers or pink butterflies here – as their slogan says: "Your Headquarters for Girl Clothes Without the Girly." Think shirts in bold colors and prints of universally beloved symbols like dogs, sharks, planes, and baseballs, along with simple, non-gender phrases like “Be awesome” – and that's the kind of clothes your will find on their site.
They have a pretty awesome mission statement too: “We hope Girls Will Be helps empower young girls to be themselves and never feel like they need to conform to the increasingly narrow definition of ‘girl’ reflected in far too many of the clothes (and other products) marketed to them. Because there is more than one way to be a girl!”
