Everyone knows that skipping breakfast isn't a good way to save calories when you are trying to lose weight. It actually has the opposite effect, and can not only cause you to eat more later on in the day, but also slow your metabolism and cause your body to hold onto fat – which is exactly what you don't want to do!
Not eating, however, isn't the only breakfast mistake that can sabotage your weight loss goals. Avoid these breakfast no-no's that can lead to weight gain:
- Waiting to eat until you get to work: It's important to eat your breakfast within an hour of waking up, because if you don't it slows down your metabolism – just like if you skipped the meal completely.
- Grabbing a muffin with your coffee: Sure, the local coffee shop has lots of yummy looking treats that would go great with your morning java, but all that sugar is not only calorie heavy, but not protein and fiber rich enough to sustain you until lunch. You will end up being more hungry and then eating more if you eat sweets in the morning.
- Yogurt for breakfast: Yogurt is super healthy and should be incorporated in your diet, but if you eat it alone for breakfast you are missing out on the fiber component that will work with the protein to keep you feeling full longer. Throw a handful of fiber-rich cereal into your yogurt so you get the perfect combo.
- Drinking Juice: You are better off eating fresh fruit than drinking juice in the morning, because fruit contains the fiber that juice doesn't. Drinking juice is just like eating a sugary breakfast – it's high in calories and will make you feel hungry and tired soon after drinking it.
