Gatorade will still quench your thirst, but it may no longer put out fires. The makers of the popular sports drink are removing brominated vegetable oil from its ingredients after a growing number of customer complaints. Brominated vegetable oil, which has already been banned in Japan and the European Union, has also been patented as a flame retardant.
The move comes after a Mississippi teenager started a campaign to remove the ingredient and it picked up steam when more than 200,000 supporters signed a petition on Change.org. However, a spokesperson for PepsiCo Inc. said the move was in the works for the past few years.
