After probably dislocating my daughter's elbow a few weeks ago, I have now given her a cold. Mother of the year here!
I know I was patient 0 when I was the first in the house to get a cold. Then 2 days later... the sneezing started. Yep, I had given my baby girl (20 months) a great big cold.
Cold are fun enough when you are an adult... but for a toddler, who can't blow their nose, skip out phlegm, or even comprehend that when they lay down they will cough more...its the saddest thing.
So, she is too young for medicine. This is what we have been trying to help keep her rested, full of fluids, and on her way to healthy town.
1. LOTS of fluids. If she wants juice, she gets juice. It's all juice all the time around here (cut in 1/2 with water)
2. LOTS of TV. Yep. I said it. Lots of TV. It's the only way to keep her still & resting. (She doesn't know she is sick and needs rest. She wants to play, outside... in the water) We've been doubling up on the Lorax, The Hive, and Little Einsteins.
3. Cool Mist Vaporizer with Vick's pads. The cool moist air helps with her cough & the vick's helps keep her breathing better. It's also been helping me with my cold too.
4. Sleeping up right. This is the toughy. It's taken us back to her premie days when she couldn't lay flat to sleep. If she is sitting up, she coughs less. When she isn't coughing, she sleeps more. The more sleep she gets, the faster she will kick this cold. The ends justify the means. It's been a few sleepless nights for my husband and I... but her wimpering wet coughs would keep us up anyway.
Well... I hope that helps. I'm NOT A DOCTOR...just a Mom stumbling through a cold. Good Luck!
