I used to be TERRIFIED of getting shots.  I used to get so worked up I would almost black out.  Luckily, I'm much better with needles now... but I do remember how it felt.

By focusing on the counting out loud it tricks your brain to not concentrate on the pain of the shot.  And that sounds great to me!
